Happiness at Work IS the Road to Success

We often think we have to work really hard to be on the road to success and that when
we’ve achieved having  the right job, a sexy body, more money, the right partner, etc., that will make us happy. Tired+businessman.jpg

Not so!

In fact, it turns out happiness is the road to success, not the other way around.

Shawn Achor, an expert on positive psychology, teacher at Harvard and author of The Happiness Advantage:  The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work, in a recent TED talk said 75% of job success is predicted by optimism, social support and being able to handle stress as a challenge rather than a threat. When the brain is thinking positive thoughts your productivity increases 31%.

Isn’t it great to know you can gain your edge and increase your success by increasing your experience of happiness?

To train your brain to be more positive and increase your experience of happiness, Shawn recommends doing these five steps every day for 21 days:

  • Show gratitude by writing down three new things you are grateful for each day.
  • Write about a positive experience you’ve had for 2 minutes once a day.
  • Teach your brain behavior matters by engaging in 15 minutes of cardio activity each day.
  • Meditate to increase your focus.
  • Engage in random, conscious acts of kindness.  Open your in box and write a email thanking a friend or colleague.

I’ll be taking Shawn’s advice to increase my positivity, happiness and success and I’ll let you know the results.  How about you?  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of happiness being the road to success.
